Miceli’s Italian Restaurant was near the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, Capitol Records Building, and Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

I’d given the menu a cursory glance in my Uber and I had to say, it looked delicious. I’d been eating on the go since arriving in Los Angeles and hadn’t really had a proper dinner. So, while I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy Rocco’s company, I was looking forward to the meal itself.

Every business in Hollywood seemed to have a prevalent awning of some sort and Miceli’s was no different. Theirs was green with white lettering, letting us know they were “the oldest Italian restaurant in Hollywood.”

So far, so good.

I was a few minutes late, so I figured they had already been seated. I made my way into Miceli’s and saw Whitney sitting with what had to be Rocco and Laney. I walked in their direction.

The restaurant definitely had an old-school Italian vibe with a red and white checkerboard patterned sheet draped over the table. It brought back great memories of eating with my father, who’d always loved Italian food.

I missed him every day, and felt myself reminiscing as I approached the table.

Not now, Quint!

Rocco was a potential suspect and I had to be on my A-game.

Whitney and the other woman, Laney, stood up. She looked down at Rocco who reluctantly got out of his seat.

“You don’t have to get up,” I said, although I’d intentionally waited until he’d already risen.

I could be a prick to people I didn’t like, or didn’t think I would like.

Whitney spoke.

“Quint, this is Rocco and Laney.”

I exchanged handshakes with them. I was expecting more from the huge man that was Rocco, but his handshake was surprisingly tame.

Laney made a nice first impression. She was bubbly and polite.

“We haven’t ordered yet,” Whitney said. “But there’s some fantastic rolls if you’d like one.”

I grabbed a roll and bit in. Soft and delicious.

I scanned the restaurant and realized this probably looked like a double date. I felt a ping of guilt, another in a long line of them since Cara had flown back to the Bay Area. I knew it was her decision to leave LA, but that didn’t stop me from beating myself up over it.

I had no intentions of being with any other woman while I was with Cara. I had never cheated and wasn’t going to start now.

That being said, any man would notice how beautiful Whitney looked. She had a low cut top, as always, but she had a jacket over it, classing herself up a little bit. Her blonde hair looked a little darker and I couldn’t tell if it was the lighting of the restaurant or if she’d actually had it done.

Laney was also very pretty, probably in her twenties like Whitney. Rocco looked to be a good ten years older, likely one of the few Rocco’s in their 30’s. That was definitely a name for seventy-year-old Italian guys, of which there were a few at Miceli’s.

I almost wanted to yell Rocco out loud and see if anyone else answered.
